What is ISO 14287 about?
ISO 14287 specifies requirements for some commonly used pad lining materials utilized on tilting pad bearings.
Who is ISO 14287 for?
ISO 14287 on pad materials for tilting pad bearings is relevant to:
- Manufacturers and suppliers of tilting pad bearings
- Manufacturers of engines, compressors, and steam turbines
- Power plants
- Turbo engineering industries
- Electrical and civil engineers
Why should you use ISO 14287?
Plain bearings are used for sliding, rotating, oscillating, or reciprocating motion. Plain bearings support and guide moving components inside the engine.
ISO 14287 gives descriptive characteristics of the lining materials are given along with the appropriate selection of pad backing and pivot materials. In order to minimise pivot wear and keep pivot stresses within acceptable limits, pivot materials are normally used in conjunction with the type of pivot design.
Due to the broad contact area, this can assist you in carrying high-capacity radial and axial loads in a small envelope, making it perfect for static oscillatory applications seen in the mining and construction sectors.
As a result, ISO 14287 can help choose the right material for your engineering needs, which can result in lower costs, longer fatigue-free service life, and smooth operation, irrespective of speed, load and temperature.
What’s changed since the last update?
BS ISO 14287:2021 supersedes BS ISO 14287:2012, which is withdrawn. BS ISO 14287:2021 includes some technically and editorially revised changes with respect to BS ISO 14287:2012. These include:
- The scope has been changed to allow the use of other materials if they have been proven to be suitable for the operating requirements
- The document has been rewritten so that the format is consistent with other standards related to materials for multilayer plain bearings
- The composition of SnSb8Cu4 referenced in Table 1 has been corrected and alternative lining materials have been added to Tables 1, 2, 3 and 4
