What is ISO 14309 – Rubber, vulcanized or thermoplastic about?
ISO 14309 specifies a method for the determination of the volume and the surface resistivity of vulcanized or thermoplastic rubbers. The method can be applied to materials with a resistivity from 101 Ω⋅m to 1017 Ω⋅m.
The methods specified in ISO 14309 were originally designed for the determination of both surface and volume resistivity of insulating rubber materials, but their use can be extended to cover the range from high to low resistivity.
the test results of ISO 14309 are sensitive to the test conditions, such as temperature and humidity, and to heat and strain history.
Who is ISO 14309 – Rubber, vulcanized or thermoplastic for?
ISO 14309 on Rubber, vulcanized or thermoplastic is relevant to:
- Manufacturers of Rubber, vulcanized or thermoplastic
- Chemical Engineer
- Researchers and scientists
- Any entity responsible for testing and quality of rubber
Why should you use ISO 14309 – Rubber, vulcanized or thermoplastic?
A surface resistivity is measured along the surface of an insulating material, while a volume resistivity is measured along its body.
ISO 14309 uses guarded electrodes to determine the resistivity of rubber test pieces since this technology is regarded as an effective compromise between minimizing errors and using more cumbersome measurement techniques.
ISO 14309 specifies three methods for determining volume resistivity that minimizes or eliminate contact resistance.
Overall, ISO 14309 is a comprehensive guide to provide methods for determining the volume or surface resistivity of rubbers and thermoplastics, so users will gain a comprehensive understanding of the quality of Rubber, vulcanized or thermoplastic to improve the quality and durability of end products.
What’s changed since the last update?
BS ISO 14309:2019 supersedes BS ISO 14309:2011, which are withdrawn and includes some technical changes with respect to the standards it supersedes:
- A detailed explanation on the requirement for the electrode gap for volume resistivity has been added in 5.4.2.
- The typical dimension for D2 has been changed to (60 ± 0,5) mm in 5.4.2.
- To calculate the volume resistivity, the effective area of the main electrode is now derived from D1 + Bg in 11.1, and the information on Bg has been newly included as Annex D.
