What is ISO 15371 - Fire-extinguishing systems about?
ISO 15371 is an international standard on ships and marine technology that discusses the criteria for testing, installing fire-extinguishing systems. ISO 15371 applies to the design, testing, and operation of pre-engineered fire extinguishing systems to protect the galley hoods, ducts, fryers, and other grease-laden appliances. Pre-engineered fire-extinguishing system units are also required to comply with requirements for the construction and components performance as applicable to specific types, designs, sizes, and arrangements. ISO 15371 also provides minimum requirements for the testing and evaluation of components. A product that contains features, characteristics, components, materials or systems that are new or different from those covered by the requirements in ISO 15371 and that involve a risk of fire, electric shock, or injury to persons, shall be evaluated using the appropriate additional component and end-product testing.
NOTE: Only deep-fat cooking equipment, among the types of galley cooking equipment covered by ISO 15371, are required by SOLAS chapter II-2 Regulation 10.6.4 to have fixed fire-extinguishing systems.
Who is ISO 15371 - Fire-extinguishing systems for?
ISO 15371 ships and marine technology is relevant to:
- Manufacturer of Fire-extinguishing systems
- Marine engineer
- Shipbuilding industry
Why should you use ISO 15371 - Fire-extinguishing systems?
A fire extinguishing system is an engineered set of components that work together to quickly detect a fire, alert occupants, and extinguish the fire before extensive damage can occur. All system components must be: Designed and approved for use on the specific fire hazards they are expected to control or extinguish.
ISO 15371 provides guidance on components, system requirements, test methods, installation, operation, and maintenance instruction manual.
ISO 15371 provides the marine industry with a means for evaluating the effectiveness of fire-extinguishing systems for a variety of grease-laden cooking appliances that may be found in a galley. ISO 15371 supplies tried and tested methods that will help users achieve high-quality fire-extinguishing systems installations. ISO 15371 not only minimize the risk of fire outbreak on ships but also reduce damage to human life and property in the event of a fire.
