What is ISO 1585 about?
ISO 1585 specifies a method for testing engines designed for automotive vehicles. It applies to the evaluation of their performance with a view, in particular to presenting curves of power and specific fuel consumption at full load as a function of engine speed.
ISO 1585 applies only to net power assessment.
ISO 1585 concerns internal combustion engines used for propulsion of passenger cars, trucks and other motor vehicles, excluding motorcycles, mopeds and agricultural tractors normally travelling on roads, and included in one of the following categories:
- Reciprocating internal combustion engines (spark-ignition or compression-ignition) but excluding free-piston engines
- Rotary piston engines
These engines can be naturally aspirated or pressure-charged, either using a mechanical supercharger or turbocharger.
Who is ISO 1585 for?
ISO 1585 on Engine test code — Net power is useful for:
- Vehicle manufacturers
- Engine manufacturers
- Engine testing facilities
Why should you use ISO 1585?
A vehicle engine is a complex machine which a lot of components working together to perform a function. There are many points of failure in an engine. Thus, testing of engines is important.
ISO 1585 specifies a method for testing engines designed for automotive vehicles.
ISO 1585 provides guidelines for the accuracy of measuring equipment and instruments so that your testing results are accurate.
ISO 1585 lists the test conditions and test procedures for testing the engine.
ISO 1585 gives guidelines for writing the test report and verification of engine performance so that you can understand and study the results.
What’s changed since the last update?
BS ISO 1585:2020 is the fourth edition that cancels and replaces the third edition (ISO 1585:1992), which has been technically revised.
The main changes compared to the previous edition are as follows:
- The air induction system definition has been updated to clarify included components
- A requirement for exhaust particulate filter restriction has been added
- A requirement for engine cooling active thermal management system settings has been added
- A power correction factor for turbocharged engines with a system compensating the ambient conditions has been added
