What is ISO 16014-4 - Distribution of polymers using SEC at high-temperature method about?
ISO 16014 discusses plastics. ISO 160144 is the fourth part of the ISO 16014 multi-series and discusses determining average molecular weight and molecular weight distribution of polymers using SEC at high-temperature method.
ISO 160144 specifies a method for determining the average molecular weight and the molecular weight distribution of polymers by size-exclusion chromatography (SEC) using an organic eluent at temperatures between 60 °C and 220 °C.
The average molecular weight and the molecular weight distribution are calculated from a calibration curve prepared using polymer standards. Therefore, this test method is classified as a relative method (see ISO 160141).
Who is ISO 16014-4 - Distribution of polymers using SEC at high-temperature method for?
ISO 16014-4 on determining average molecular weight and molecular weight distribution of polymers using SEC at high-temperature method is useful for:
- Plastic products manufacturers
- Plastic manufacturers
- Quality control personnel
- Testing laboratories
Why should you use ISO 16014-4 - Distribution of polymers using SEC at high-temperature method?
Size-exclusion chromatography (SEC), also known as molecular sieve chromatography, is a chromatographic method in which molecules in solution are separated by their size, and in some cases molecular weight. It is usually applied to large molecules or macromolecular complexes such as proteins and industrial polymers.
ISO 16014-4 provides you with the method of determining the average molecular weight and the molecular weight distribution of polymers using size-exclusion chromatography (SEC) using an organic eluent at temperatures between 60 °C and 220 °C. ISO 160144 provides you guidance with reagents and apparatus required for the method.
ISO 160143 guides you with the procedure and helps you with data acquisition and data processing. ISO 160143 provides you guidance on the expression of results and test reports. ISO 160143 helps you with the important method of characterizing polymers.
What’s changed since the last update?
BS ISO 16014-4:2019 supersedes BS ISO 160144:2012, which is withdrawn. BS ISO 16014-4:2019 includes some technical changes with respect to BS ISO 160144:2012. These include:
- Publication dates of references have been removed
- Molecular mass has been changed to molecular weight according to the IUPAC rule
- The operating temperature of the columns has been changed from 60 °C to 220 °C
