What is ISO 16075‑2 about?
The ISO 16075 series discusses guidelines for treated wastewater use for irrigation projects. ISO 16075‑2 covers guidelines for the design of treated wastewater (TWW) irrigation projects intended to prevent public health risks within the population that has been in direct or indirect contact with the TWW or with any product that has come in contact with the TWW.
ISO 16075‑2 also gives specifications for the following:
- TWW quality for irrigation purposes
- Types of crops for TWW irrigated
- TWW and crops qualities integration
- Use of barriers to reduce risks arising from TWW irrigation
- The correlation between the quality of the TWW
- Irrigated crops, and the types of barriers that can be used
- The distance between TWW irrigated areas and residential areas
Note: None of the parts of the ISO 16075 series is intended to be used for certification purposes.
Who is ISO 16075‑2 for?
ISO 16075‑2 on the development of treated wastewater irrigation project is useful for:
- Organizations that wish to reuse wastewater
- Professionals, such as irrigation companies (designers and operators)
- Agricultural extension officers or advisors
- Water companies (designers and operators)
- Local authorities and water utilities
Why should you use ISO 16075‑2?
The increasing water scarcity and water pollution control efforts in many countries have made treated municipal and industrial wastewater a suitable option for augmenting the existing water supply. Treated wastewater (also referred to as reclaimed water or recycled water) can be used for various non-potable purposes. The dominant applications for the use of treated wastewater include agricultural irrigation, landscape irrigation, industrial reuse, and groundwater recharge.
ISO 16075‑2 specifies development designs for your TWW irrigation project so it doesn’t cause any health-related risks to the local public. ISO 16075‑2 also provides you with details about TWW quality for irrigation. This helps you to use treated wastewater on different irrigation projects based on their quality. ISO 16075‑2 helps you to design and develop your project considering all the safety aspects for the surrounding public, this ensures that your TWW irrigation project won’t compromise their safety. ISO 16075‑2 provides you with the basis for a healthy, hydrological, environmental and agronomic conscious design, operation, monitoring, and maintenance of an irrigation system using treated wastewater.
What’s changed since the last update?
BS ISO 16075‑2:2020 replaces ISO 16075-2:2015, which has been technically revised. The main changes compared to the previous edition are as follows:
- Updated the values of turbidity in Table 1— suggested treated wastewater quality according to chemical, physical and biological parameters)
- Updated the issue of Irrigation of public gardens in Table 2 — Suggested types and accredited number of barriers
- Updated the subject of public and private gardens irrigation by treated wastewater (TWW)
- Added Clause 7: Public health aspects of garden irrigation with treated greywater and
- Updated Table A.1 added new column— washing or disinfection the produce
