What is BS ISO 1711-2 – machine-operated sockets technical specifications about?
Impact sockets are used with powered impact wrenches or drivers where greater force can be applied. Impact sockets are usually used by mechanics to remove seized nuts and bolts from vehicles. Impact sockets are designed to cope with the vibration caused by an impact wrench.
BS ISO 1711-2 specifies hardness and minimum torsional strength for machine-operated square drive sockets in accordance with ISO 2725-2 intended for use with impact wrenches.
Example: Reference nos. 2 2 02 01 0; 2 2 02 02 0; 5 2 00 04 0.
Note: The sockets mentioned above are listed under their respective reference numbers in ISO 1703.
Who is BS ISO 1711-2 - machine-operated sockets technical specifications for?
BS ISO 1711-2 on machine-operated sockets technical specifications is useful for:
- The automotive industry
- Manufacturers of wrenches and sockets
- Product designers/ design engineers
- Quality control personnel
Why should you use BS ISO 1711-2 - machine-operated sockets technical specifications?
When testing machine-operated impact sockets, there are three types of testing that could be relevant:
- Torsional testing
- Impact testing
- Endurance testing
BS ISO 1711-2 covers only torsional testing of machine-operated sockets. The torsional test and hardness values are given in BS ISO 1711-2 to ensure that sockets will last a reasonable impact life if the appropriate tool is used. BS ISO 1711-2 states hardness and minimum torsional strength for machine-operated sockets. BS ISO 1711-2 explains the requirements for testing torsion torques and hardness testing. BS ISO 1711-2 sets down the guidelines for testing machine-operated drive sockets. The torque testing of the tools has been described in detail in BS ISO 1711-2.
Using BS ISO 1711-2 guidelines, you ensure that sockets are strong enough to cope with the vibration caused by impact wrenches, and the two work together to secure bolts and nuts.
What’s changed since the last update?
BS ISO 1711-2 supersedes BS ISO 1711‑2:2016, which is withdrawn. This fourth edition cancels and replaces the third edition (ISO 1711-2:2016), which has been technically revised. The main changes compared to the previous edition are as follows:
- General tolerances on opening have been added
- Additional sizes 26 and 29 for width across flats have been added to Table 3
- The structure of the document has been revised
