What is ISO 17493-Test method for convective heat resistance of protective clothing about?
ISO 17493 is an international standard on clothing and equipment for protection against heat. ISO 17493 discusses the test method for convective heat resistance using a hot air circulating oven to ensure heat resistance.
ISO 17493 describes a test method for evaluating the heat resistance of protective clothing materials or items and equipment when exposed in a hot air circulating oven. The method is intended to evaluate physical changes in a material at a given exposure temperature. Materials are evaluated for defined visible changes including the measurement of shrinkage.
The test method specified under ISO 17493 allows for the evaluation of the heat resistance of materials, protective clothing and equipment when suspended in a hot air circulating oven at a specified temperature of typically 180 °C or 260 °C for typically 5 min. ISO 17493 provides different procedures are provided depending on the type of protective clothing material or item being tested.
Who is ISO 17493-Test method for convective heat resistance of protective clothing for?
ISO 17493 on test method for convective heat resistance of protective clothing is useful for:
- Protective clothing and equipment manufacturers
- Protective clothing and equipment designers
- Protective clothing and equipment test personnel
- Occupational health and safety departments
- Risk assessment authorities
- Quality assurance departments
Why should you use ISO 17493-Test method for convective heat resistance of protective clothing?
Thermal protective clothing is designed to protect from hazardous thermal environments. A combination of textile layers and the air gap between them prevents the transfer of thermal energy to the skin.
ISO 17493 provides you with apparatus, specimens, calibration of test oven, procedure for flat textile or other sheet materials, the procedure for protective gloves, a procedure for protective footwear, a procedure for protective helmets and eye or face protection devices, procedures for small items and accessories on clothing, and much more.
The test methods and procedures provided by ISO 17493 assist in improving the performance and quality of the protective clothing and ensure protection from the risk of injures due to heat. With obedience and compliance to ISO 17493, you can enhance the efficacy of protective clothing and equipment and manufacture a standardized product.
What is changed since the last update?
BS ISO 17493:2016 supersedes ISO 17493:2000, which is withdrawn. BS ISO 17493:2016 has made some technical changes compared to the previous edition ISO 17493:2000. These include:
- The specifications for the apparatus have been improved and completed
- Procedures for the calibration of the test oven have been added
- A list of ASTM standards related to ISO 17493 is given in the Bibliography
