What is ISO 17497-1 - Measurement of sound-scattering properties of surfaces about?
ISO 17497-1 is the first part of the multiple series that specifies a method of measuring the random incidence scattering coefficient of surfaces as caused by surface roughness.
The measurements are made in a reverberation room, either in full scale or on a physical scale model. The measurement results can be used to describe how much the sound reflection from a surface deviate from a specular reflection. The results obtained can be used for comparison purposes and for design calculations with respect to room acoustics and noise control.
Note: ISO 17497-1 method is not intended for characterizing the spatial uniformity of the scattering from a surface.
Who is ISO 17497-1 - Measurement of sound-scattering properties of surfaces for?
ISO 17497-1 on sound-scattering properties of surfaces is useful for:
- Acousticians
- Construction industries
- Civil engineers
- Contractors
- Builders
- Acoustical engineers
- Testing laboratories of sound-scattering properties
Why should you use ISO 17497-1 - Measurement of sound-scattering properties of surfaces?
The degree of acoustic scattering from surfaces is very important in all aspects of room acoustics (e.g., in concert halls, sound studios, industrial halls and reverberation chambers).
ISO 17497-1 specifies a test method for the absorption coefficient that is useful in room-acoustic calculations, simulations, and prediction models. ISO 17497-1 provides a general principle of the method for measuring sound-scattering properties of surfaces for different orientations of the test sample in the free field.
Overall, ISO 17497-1 enables you to quantify a surface's scattering qualities to replace previously used but not widely accepted estimation approaches.
