What is ISO 18947-1 about?
ISO 18947-1 is the first part of multi-series of International Standard that specifies information regarding test methods for determination of rub resistance of analogue and digital prints.
ISO 18947-1 provides guidance in selection and operation of abrasion test methods and describes general performance requirements for abrasion test devices used.
ISO 18947-1 specifies standardized requirements for evaluating the abrasion resistance of image prints in their various formats.
Who is ISO 18947-1 for?
ISO 18947-1 on imaging materials and prints:
- Manufacturers of abrasion test devices
- Developers of imaging materials and prints
- Print industry
Why should you use ISO 18947-1 ?
Permanence and durability of image prints determines its resistance to physical, mechanical, chemical and/or environmental stresses in conditions of use. Depending upon their intended use applications, rub resistance is a desirable and sometimes critical property of prints.
ISO 18947-1 provides standardized requirements to evaluate the abrasion resistance of image prints in their various formats.
ISO 18947-1 provides reasonably simple procedure that can be used to set specifications for prints and determine whether a product meets a predetermined standard for abrasion, smudge, or scuff resistance for a given application.
The selection and operation of abrasion test methods mentioned under ISO 18947-1 can help you evaluate the performance of your test devices, thus enhancing their functionality and performance, while minimizing incidence of product damage.
Overall, adhering to standardized requirements under ISO 18947-1 can increase the quality of analogue and digital prints across various formats and avoid degradation in both image quality and physical properties.
What’s changed since the last update?
BS ISO 18947-1:2021 supersedes BS ISO 18947:2013 which is withdrawn. The main changes are:
- Addition of visual evaluation
- Introduction of more test devices
- Graphic prints and office prints are also covered
