What is ISO 20663 about?
ISO 20663 specifies the components and structure, general requirements, and subsystem functional requirements, of grab dredger supervisory and control systems (GD-SCS).
ISO 20663 applies only to the installed components, functions, or systems.
ISO 20663 covers the design, manufacture, and modifications.
Who is ISO 20663 for?
ISO 20663 on grab dredger supervisory and control systems is applicable to:
- Ships and marine technology providers
- Manufacturers of parts and equipment used in marine technology
- Product design engineers
- Mechanical engineers
- Port development and maintenance authorities
Why should you use ISO 20663?
GD-SCS is a system used for supervising and controlling the operations of a grab dredger. A grab dredger is a type of dredger that operates with a clamshell.
ISO 20663 provides you with the guidelines for establishing an GD-SCS that consists of supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) and dredging profile monitor (DPM) and is used to monitor and control the dredging process with a grab.
ISO 20663 gives you guidelines about the components and structure, general requirements, and design guidelines of grab dredger supervisory and control systems.
The main functions of the DPM are to measure the position and heading of the grab dredger, and the position and depth of the grab bucket, and to provide for visualization in the plan view with a numeric window and side views.
Moreover, the standardised industry practice on graphical adoptions for alarm levels provided in ISO 20663 is important to communicate effectively and mitigate risks in case dredging equipment fails or running parameters are oversetting values.
Overall, an effective GD-SCS system in compliance with ISO 20663 is essential to secure the vessel from product failures and damages while enabling the efficient removal of sediments from the seabed for seamless navigation. ISO 20663 can be particularly useful if you are involved with reclamation work.
