What is ISO 21342 - Automotive belts and pulleys about?
ISO 21342 is an international standard on road vehicles that discusses belts & pulley drive. ISO 21342 specifies the characteristics of synchronous endless belts and their related pulleys for use in automotive applications such as engine camshaft drives.
The characteristics include:
- Belt pitch spacing
- Belt nominal tooth dimensions
- Belt width and width tolerance
- Belt pitch length and pitch length tolerance
- Pulley groove dimensions and tolerances
- Pulley tolerances and quality specifications.
NOTE: Test methods for measuring belt pitch length and lateral runout are also included.
Who is ISO 21342 - Automotive belts and pulleys for?
ISO 21342 on automotive belts and pulleys is useful for:
- Road vehicle designers and manufacturers
- Mechanical engineers
- Manufacturers of automotive belts and pulleys
Why should you use ISO 21342 - Automotive belts and pulleys?
A drive belt is a single, continuous belt used by automotive engines to rotate multiple peripheral devices in the engine and the belt is allowed to pass over pulleys that are designed to fitly enclose the belt to avoid slipping.
ISO 21342 provides the profiles for synchronous drives for automotive applications and determines belt designation which is designated by a series of numbers and letters.
ISO 21342 navigates you through the belt dimensions and tolerances that includes the nominal belt tooth dimensions for:
- Trapezoidal tooth belts of types ZA and ZB
- Curvilinear tooth belts of types ZH and YH
- Curvilinear tooth belts of types YR and ZR
- Curvilinear tooth belts of types YS and ZS
- Belt pitch length and tolerances and belt widths and tolerances.
The pitch length of a synchronous belt is determined in ISO 21342 by placing the belt on a measuring fixture.
The lateral run out of a synchronous belt and pulleys can be measured using the mechanism described in ISO 21342.
ISO 21342 provides guidance on pulley types, pulley designation, pulley groove profile and pulley dimensions and tolerances for a synchronous drive for automobiles.
Overall, ISO 21342 can help you design synchronous belts and pulleys for road vehicles to safeguard machinery from overload and jamming, as well as to increase or decrease the pace of its powers, convey rotational motion, and transport heavy loads with ease. With obedience and compliance to ISO 21342, you can achieve precision in terms of product functionality.
