What is ISO 2137 about?
ISO 2137 is an international standard on petroleum products and lubricants that discusses the procedures to deduce the viscosity of grease. ISO 2137 specifies several methods for the empirical estimation of the consistency of lubricating greases and petrolatum by measuring the penetration of a standardized cone.
ISO 2137 specifies four procedures for determining the consistency of lubricating greases by measuring the penetration of a full-scale cone.
Who is ISO 2137 for?
ISO 2137 on lubricating greases and petrolatum is relevant to:
- Manufacturer of petroleum products and lubricants
- Lubricating greases testing laboratories
Why should you use ISO 2137?
The cone penetration method is used to rate the viscosity of lubricating grease. The method is specified by National Lubricating Grease Institute (NLGI)
ISO 2137 provides guidance on the usage of apparatus, sampling, procedures for lubricating grease using full-scale methods, using one-half-scale and one-quarter-scale cone method, the procedure for determining the cone penetration of petrolatum, test report
As a user of ISO 2137, you can be ensured of the viscosity of lubricating grease.
With the help of ISO 2137, the user can efficiently perform the cone penetration method.
ISO 2137 assist the user in determining the consistency of the grease and determines its strength and smoothness as well as its later use. In this manner, you can produce high-quality and reliable products.
ISO 2137 contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goal 12 on responsible consumption and production.
What’s changed since the last update?
BS ISO 2137:2020 supersedes ISO 2137:2007, which has been withdrawn.
The main changes compared to the previous edition are as follows:
- Cleaning of cone and shaft assembly with solvent has been introduced to eliminate any drag forces
- The precision table for repeatability and reproducibility for one-half-scale and one-quarter-scale has been revised to keep only an unconverted value
