What is ISO 2144 on Determining ash content about?
ISO 2144 is an international multi-series standard that covers guidelines for paper, board, pulps, and cellulose nanomaterials.
ISO 2144 describes the determination of the residue (ash content) on the ignition of paper, board, pulps, and cellulose nanomaterials. It is applicable to all types of paper, board, pulp, and cellulose nanomaterial.
ISO 2144 provides measurement procedures to obtain a measurement precision of 0.01 % or better for residue (ash content) on ignition at 900°C.
ISO 2144 specifies technicalities terms, definitions, test principle, apparatus for the test, sampling and preparation of test specimen, test procedure, expression of results, etc. for determination of residue (ash content) on ignition of paper, board, pulps, and cellulose nanomaterials at 900°C.
Who is ISO 2144 on Determining ash content for?
ISO 2144 on determining ash content is useful for:
- Manufacturers and suppliers of paper and boards
- Paper mills, pulp, and boards industry
- Designers of paper and boards
- Test /service providers for paper and boards
Why should you use ISO 2144 on Determining ash content?
The magnitude of the residue (ash content) on ignition at a given temperature is related to the content of mineral constituents in the paper, board, or other products.
ISO 2144 gives you test procedures for determining the ash content (residue) in the paper, board, pulps, and cellulose nanomaterials. This helps you understand and calculate the amount of added mineral constituents from the result. It gives an example of China clay, the residue on ignition at 900 °C varies from 89 % to 86 % and for calcium carbonate, it is about 56%.
ISO 2144 enables you to mainly use the result value as a screening test for checking the overall quality of a product, i.e., paper, board, pulp, and cellulose nanomaterials. The ignition procedure described can be used as a preliminary step when determining particular mineral constituents.
What’s changed since the last update?
BS ISO 2144:2019 supersedes BS ISO 2144:2015, which is withdrawn. BS ISO 2144:2019 includes the following changes:
- Scope revised to cover cellulose nanomaterials instead of only paper, board, and pulps
- A definition of cellulose nanomaterial, along with additional instructions for sampling, sample preparation, and incineration for cellulose nanomaterials have been incorporated
- Additional instructions are given on how to express results when a sample has low ash content
