What is ISO 21815-1 - Collision warning and avoidance of earth-moving machinery about?
Earthmoving equipment speeds up civil engineering or building projects and reduces the amount of manpower needed. ISO 21815-1 is an International Standard that discusses earth-moving machinery for collision warning and avoidance.
ISO 21815-1 is the second part of the multi-series and provides terminology and general guidance on the principles of collision warning and collision avoidance systems for:
- Earthmoving machinery as defined in ISO 6165
- Mobile underground mining machinery as defined in ISO 19296
- Road construction machinery as defined in ISO 22242
Note: ISO 21815-1 covers collision avoidance by speed reduction or motion inhibit: it does not cover avoidance by automatic manoeuvring (e.g., steering) away from the intended object.
Note: ISO 21815-1 is not applicable to collision warning and collision avoidance systems installed on the machine before the date of its publication.
Who is ISO 21815-1 - Collision warning and avoidance of earth-moving machinery for?
ISO 21815-1 on collision warning and avoidance of earth-moving machinery is useful for:
- Entities involved in commissioning, maintenance, and operation of earth-moving machinery
- Regulators, accident prevention organizations
- Site managers
- Machine operators and trainers
- Supervisors
- Earth-moving machine manufacturers
- Collision avoidance system (CAS) device manufacturers
- Collision warning system (CWS) device manufacturers
- Industries such as mining and construction
Why should you use ISO 21815-1 - Collision warning and avoidance of earth-moving machinery?
Collision avoidance techniques help to prevent accidents and let projects run smoothly and without delays.
The machinery concerned and the extent to which hazards, hazardous situations, or hazardous events are covered are indicated in ISO 21815-1.
Increasing use of detection systems and avoidance technology in the area of earth-moving machinery has been supporting operators to safely operate machines in the field of mining and construction. At the same time, there are demands to set standards for machines and systems detecting, alerting, and intervening to mitigate collision risk.
The systems described in ISO 21815-1 are intended to assist the operator of the machine.
ISO 21815-1 is a part of the ISO 21815 series relating to communication interfaces, collision risk areas and collision risk levels, specific requirements for collision warning and collision avoidance systems, and specific use case requirements.
ISO 21815-1 provides general requirements for detection of objects, warnings to the operator, automatic intervention control to avoid a collision, and test procedures. ISO 21815-1 is intended to be used in conjunction with the other parts of the ISO 21815 series, which provide detailed guidance and requirements for collision warning and collision avoidance systems and determining risk areas and risk levels. The specific requirements and definitions for particular types of machines are defined in the use case parts of the ISO 21815 series.
Compliance with ISO 21815-1, amidst the increased use of detection systems and avoidance technology, can assist operators in safely operating machines in the mining and construction industries.
