What is ISO 21874- PVD multi-layer hard coatings about?
ISO 21874 is an International Standard that discusses PVD multi-layer hard coatings.
ISO 21874 specifies the evaluation standard of the composition, structure, and properties of multi-layer hard coatings by common physical vapor deposition (PVD), indicating a vacuum deposition method that produces a material source by evaporation, sputtering, or related non-chemical ways.
PVD technology is highly adapted to realizing novel and advanced coating concepts such as gradient coatings, metastable coatings, multi-component coatings, multilayer coatings, and superlattice coatings. Among these coating concepts, multilayer coatings appear to be the most promising since they suit a wide range of requirements for a composite subjected to complex wear conditions.
Who is ISO 21874- PVD multi-layer hard coatings for?
ISO 21874 on PVD multi-layer hard coatings is useful to:
- Aerospace manufacturers
- Automotive manufacturers
- Architectural ironmongery
- Sheet metal manufacturers
- Coating technology providers
- Organic semiconductors manufacturers
- Interior hardware, panelling, and fixture manufacturers
- Consumer electronics manufacturers
Why should you use ISO 21874- PVD multi-layer hard coatings?
PVD coatings are generally used to improve hardness, increase wear-resistance, and prevent oxidation. PVD coatings are used in a wide range of applications. Multi-layer hard coatings by PVD, which possess high coating-substrate adhesion, high hardness and good wear resistance, are widely applied on tools and machine parts to improve their service life. Based on the chemical compositions, the mainstream PVD multi-layer hard coatings in the market involve transition metal nitrides and carbides.
ISO 21874 defines the measurement and evaluation of the composition, microstructure, surface quality, thickness, hardness and tribological properties (such as friction and wear performance) of multi-layer hard coatings. The methods are for the purpose of coating development. Where standards for quality assurance in production exist, they are referred to in ISO 21874.
Overall, ISO 21874 helps establish coatings with optimal properties that contribute to the efficiency and durability of the end-application. Moreover, you can adopt these evaluation standards for your product development and R&D initiatives, for improved credibility and reliability across the coating technology industry.
