BS ISO 22002-4:2025

What is BS ISO 22002-4:2025 - Food packaging manufacturing about?

BS ISO 22002-4:2025 defines prerequisite programmes (PRPs) for packaging manufacturing, ensuring packaging does not compromise food safety.

Who is BS ISO 22002-4:2025 - Food packaging manufacturing for?

BS ISO 22002-4:2025 is applicable to all food packaging manufacturers, regardless of size or production complexity.

What does BS ISO 22002-4:2025 - Food packaging manufacturing cover?

This standard covers:

• Handling printed and coated materials.
• Controlling risks of chemical migration.
• Contamination prevention in packaging processes.
• Safe rework protocols for packaging materials.
• Why should you use BS ISO 22002-4:2025 - Food packaging manufacturing?

This standard is beneficial because it:

• Protects food safety through packaging integrity.
• Helps manufacturers demonstrate compliance with ISO 22000.
• Provides internationally recognized controls for a critical part of the food supply chain.

What's changed?

Key differences from the previous edition (PD ISO/TS 22002-4:2013) include:

The standard has been ‘upgraded’ from a Technical Specification to a full International Standard, reflecting broader consensus and formalization.

• Refined scope: The new edition applies only to food packaging manufacturing, whereas the 2013 version had a broader scope within the food supply chain.
• Separation of common requirements: Common PRP requirements are now housed in ISO 22002-100, which must be used in conjunction with this document. This modular structure improves clarity and consistency across different sectors of the food chain.
• New and clarified provisions have been added, such as: the handling of printed and coated materials to prevent chemical contamination, the control of migration risks from packaging materials, the specific hygiene and contamination controls tailored to packaging environments and the rework usage protocols to ensure traceability and safety.

This shift enables more precise application of food safety principles in packaging contexts and aligns with evolving industry practices and regulatory expectations.
