What is ISO 22449‑1 about?
The ISO 22449 series discusses the reuse of water in industrial cooling systems. ISO 22449‑1 defines terms related to industrial cooling water systems and specifies technical guidelines for the use of reclaimed water for make-up water and purposes water, in industrial cooling systems. ISO 22449‑1 provides a basic framework for consideration in the design and operation of industrial cooling systems using reclaimed water. ISO 22449‑1 encourages you to use reclaimed water in industrial cooling systems.
ISO 22449‑1 provides:
- Terms and definitions
- Technical guidelines for the use of reclaimed water in industrial cooling systems
ISO 22449‑1 is applicable to cooling systems that are considered to work as auxiliary systems for the normal operation of an industrial process. In addition, some environmental concerns also need to be taken into consideration, for example, drift control or the use of some persistent biocides. ISO 22449‑1 encourages you to be consistent in using reclaimed water.
Note: The operation of a cooling system in relation to process safety is not covered in ISO 22449‑1.
Who is ISO 22449‑1 for?
ISO 22449‑1 on the use of reclaimed water in industrial cooling systems is useful for:
- Any industrial setup that requires cooling systems
- Industrial wastewater treatment plants
- Maintenance personnel
Why should you use ISO 22449‑1?
The design of a cooling system is a complex matter balancing the cooling requirements of the process. The process of designing industrial cooling systems is completed by assessing the best choice considering environmental issues and the constraints linked to the industrial process. However, as a nonconventional water source, reclaimed water can reduce the replenishment of fresh water when it is used as make-up water. If technically and economically possible, the use of reclaimed water improves the environmental performance of the system.
ISO 22449‑1 will provide you with guidelines for the implementation/installation of reclaimed water cooling systems. ISO 22449‑1 helps you to identify the parameters for reclaimed water to ensure that it doesn’t damage your cooling systems. ISO 22449‑1 also suggests wastewater treatment technologies so the reclaimed water is suitable for your cooling systems. These technologies will also help you to avoid inhibition of corrosion, fouling and scaling in cooling systems.
ISO 22449‑1 helps you to become environmentally sustainable by reusing water resources, improving water use efficiency, and practising the concept of an industrial circular economy.
