What is ISO 22888 about ?
ISO 22888 is an international standard that specifies the concepts and basic requirements for the planning of railway operation in order to reduce risk in the event of earthquakes.
Note: This excludes regions where the consequences of seismic hazards for railway operation are low or non-existent.
Note: ISO 22888 includes only operational measures and excludes any infrastructure measures. Furthermore, this document does not include specific measures which ensure, without fail, passenger safety or which provide protection against railway-operational damage caused by earthquakes. Therefore, residual risk can remain.
Who is ISO 22888 for ?
ISO 22888 on the planning of railway operation in the event of earthquakes is useful for:
- Railway engineers
- Personnel of electric power systems
- Passengers
Why should you use ISO 22888 ?
ISO 22888 defines the five cyclic stages which are needed to consider the countermeasures necessary for railway operation during the time period of an earthquake which includes:
- Stage 1: Detection of earthquake
- Stage 2: Decision for operational restriction
- Stage 3: Implementation of operational restriction
- Stage 4: Inspection
- Stage 5: Resumption of regular condition
ISO 22888 defines the ideas for railway operation planning in order to reduce the risk to safety and economic loss to customers and operators, and trains should resume regular service as soon as it is deemed safe to do so.
ISO 22888 provides the development of procedures and the basic requirements for railway operation at each stage.
Overall, railway operation planning in the case of an earthquake is required to save the lives of passengers as well as railway personnel and to prevent damage to train infrastructure.
