What is ISO 22934 about?
ISO 22934 discusses graphic technology of offset ink properties. Offset ink has the highest possible colour strength characteristics due to the thin printed colour film (0.25 – 2 µm). They disperse well into the binder–solvent system and be hydrophobic to prevent interaction with the fountain water.
ISO 22934 specifies offset ink-related properties which are intended to be communicated between the ink supplier and the printer, and which are essential for the optimized print production planning and the intended use of the final product.
Note 1: The final product is not necessarily the finished print product.
Note 2: Aspects related to food safety and other safety requirements like children's toys safety are not part of the scope of ISO 22934.
Who is ISO 22934 for?
ISO 22934 on graphic technology is useful for:
- Ink Manufacturers
- Printer Manufacturers
- Printing and Packaging Department of food products
Why should you use ISO 22934?
Offset printing inks are special purpose, complex mixtures of chemicals intended to be applied on a substrate by offset printing. They have customized properties and define drying mechanisms resulting in ink films with standard or customized properties.
ISO 22934 provides you with the requirements on the communication of offset ink properties, aiming to optimize the planning of printing and to ensure the inks have the appropriate properties for the intended use of the printed products. Examples are the use of alkali resistant inks for combined use with dispersion varnishes to avoid colour changes after printing or the use of higher light fast inks for outdoor applications.
