What is ISO 22949‑1 about?
ISO 22949‑1 is the first in the series of documents on molecular biomarker analysis. ISO 22949‑1 specifies general requirements for DNA sequencing method performance in the detection and identification of animal species in food and feed products. Performance requirements are limited to Sanger and next-generation sequencing (NGS), including second and third-generation sequencing, for analysis of single-species products and multispecies products.
ISO 22949‑1 is applicable to DNA sequences for mammals, birds, fish, molluscs, crustaceans, amphibians, reptiles, and insects, and to the validation of the applicable methods.
Note: Methods for DNA species quantification are not considered under the scope of ISO 22949‑1
Who is ISO 22949‑1 for?
ISO 22949‑1 on molecular biomarker analysis is useful for:
- Food scientists
- Food technologists
- Food research and analysis agencies
- Food laboratories
Why should you use ISO 22949‑1?
The DNA base sequence carries the information a cell needs to assemble protein and RNA molecules. DNA sequence information is important to scientists investigating the functions of genes.
ISO 22949‑1 provides general guidance for deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) sequencing for animal species detection or identification, or both, in food and feed products.
ISO 22949‑1 specifies performance requirements methods such as Sanger and next-generation sequencing (NGS), including second and third-generation sequencing, for analysis of single-species products and multispecies products.
The Sanger sequencing (dideoxy chain termination) generates high-quality data for determining a single DNA sequence of an individual target. NGS can assess millions of individual DNA fragments of mixed markers and targets at the same time.
The Sanger and next-generation sequencing methods described in ISO 22949‑1 enable you to verify the authenticity of animal food and feed products.
