What is ISO 22980 about?
ISO 22980 is an international standard that covers continuous flow analysis testing methods using KSCN/DCIC in tobacco products that facilitates determination of purity of nicotine and analysis of nicotine content to regulate its presence according to regulatory rules.
ISO 22980 specifies a method for the determination of the content of total alkaloids as nicotine in tobacco by continuous-flow analysis.
ISO 22980 method is applicable to leaf samples, stems, reconstituted tobacco sheet materials and tobacco blends.
ISO 22980 method eliminates the use of the potassium cyanide (KCN) by employing potassium thiocyanate (KSCN) with sodium dichloroisocyanurate dihydrate (DCIC) for colour development.
Who is ISO 22980 for?
ISO 22980 on determining the content of total alkaloids as nicotine applies to:
- Tobacco industries
- Dealers, suppliers and importers of tobacco
- Testing houses and labs for tobacco testing
- Government regulators
Why should you use ISO 22980?
Nicotine is a liquid plant alkaloid found in tobacco plants. Nicotine is a highly addictive central nervous system stimulant that induces ganglionic blockade. In large quantities, it might cause nausea and vomiting. In continuous flow method as opposed to manual methods, it requires smaller sample volume, reagent consumption and higher throughput.
ISO 22980 provides you guidance on continuous flow analysis method using KSCN/DCIC method that enables determining the content of total alkaloids as nicotine that enables measuring of multiple parameters simultaneously and ensures the accuracy of the test results.
ISO 22980 ensures that you perform the method accurately by providing you with a step-by-step procedure for the method.
The guidance in ISO 22980 enables you to accurately identify the content of total alkaloids as nicotine to determine the purity of nicotine and its application in tobacco products.
