What is BS ISO 23055 about?
ISO 23055 specifies the material requirements and dimensions of an international flange for the transfer of ballast water between a ship and a shore reception facility, or between ships.
The need for a standardized international flange for ballast water transfer systems has been presented to the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Marine Environmental Protection Committee (MEPC). A standard transfer connection will help enable the efficient transfer of ballast water between ships and facilities in accordance with the Guidelines of the International Maritime Organization (IMO Resolution MEPC.153(55) – G5).
Note: ISO 23055 does not address any reconfiguration of the ship’s ballast water piping system necessary to connect to the shore-side, e.g. construction of piping from the ship lower machinery levels to the main deck transfer area.
Who is ISO 23055 for?
ISO 23055 on ships and marine technology is applicable to:
- Maritime industries
- Maritime Organizations
- Shipbuilding
- Shipbuilding and naval products manufacturers
- International ballast water transfer connection flange design engineers
Why should you use ISO 23055?
It is recognized that when ballast water is transferred between a ship and a shore-side facility or another ship, an effective solution in managing ballast water treatment is required.
The guidelines provided in ISO 23055 assist you in designing an international flange for the transfer of ballast water in accordance with globally recognised standards.
Following the design requirements ISO 23055 you will be able to manufacture cost-effective and high-quality flange for the transfer of ballast water between a ship and a shore reception facility.
ISO 23055 specifies a standardised interface flange material and criteria to help ships and shore facilities link ballast water transfer pipes efficiently. This is similar to the international fire main ship/shore link mandated by the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS).
