What is ISO 23129 about?
ISO 23129 is part of a series on space systems. BS ISO 23129:2021 discusses thermal control coatings for spacecrafts. BS ISO 23129:2021 specifies requirements for atomic oxygen (AO) protective coatings that are applied on polyimide thermal control films.
ISO 23129 also specifies the different properties of coated polyimide films such as indium tin oxide (ITO), SiOx, germanium, and silicone, property measurement test methods, and selection guidelines.
BS ISO 23129:2021 describes technical information for the selection and application of atomic oxygen protective coatings as required to conform with requirements for the protection of polyimide film. Requirements for coating properties and quality control are also specified in ISO 23129, to eliminate defective products, improve the quality and function of films, accelerate the exchange and distribution of coating techniques, invite new providers to the market, introduce competition, and enhance international trade.
Who is ISO 23129 for?
ISO 23129 on space system for thermal control coatings for spacecraft is applicable to:
- Plastics industry
- Polyimide film manufacturers
- Aerospace and defense industry
- Spacecraft manufacturers
- Atomic coating and thermal coating manufacturers
- Space engineers
Why should you use ISO 23129?
Satellites in low Earth orbit are subjected to high-energy radiation particles and atomic oxygen, that corrode and weaken a spacecraft’s exterior. Polymide films are used as multilayer insulation materials to protect the external surface of spacecraft. But polyimide needs additional protective coating to resist atomic oxygen. BS ISO 23129:2021 summarizes the coating properties as well as considerations for selecting the coating material.
Following guidelines provided in ISO 23129 helps spacecraft designers and manufacturers to select suitable atomic oxygen protective coatings. This helps you to conform with the requirements for the protection of the polyimide film.
ISO 23129 provides the spacecraft designers and thermal control film manufacturers with a property map of the types of atomic oxygen protective coatings which helps to enhance coating selection, indicates selection guidelines, and improves the reliability of your spacecraft.
The requirements provided in ISO 23129 help you with quality control, elimination of defective products, acceleration, and the exchange and distribution of coating techniques
