What is ISO 23293 about?
ISO 23293 is an international standard that discusses milk-based infant formula powders.
ISO 23293 specifies a method for the determination of the whey to casein protein ratio, ranging from 20:80 to 80:20 in cow milk-based infant formula powders.
ISO 23293 does not apply to the analysis of infant formulas containing hydrolyzed protein or proteins from other sources (e.g. plants or milk from other mammals).
Who is ISO 23293 for?
ISO 23293 on the milk-based infant formula powders is relevant to:
- Manufacturers of milk-based infant formula
- Nutrition testing and certification bodies
- Food technologists
- Regulatory bodies
Why should you use ISO 23293?
One of the most common uses of whey protein is in infant formula powders as a source of essential nutrients and amino acids. In SDS-CGE, proteins in infant formula samples are denatured by the anionic surfactant SDS and reduced by β-mercaptoethanol.
In this regard, ISO 23293 can help you make the necessary adjustments to the whey protein-casein level ratio in infant formula powders so as to make an accurate assessment on how the they are digested in the body.
As a result, standardised methods to assess the nutritional value in compliance with ISO 23293, helps foster reliability and trust for your products, by keeping in mind the health requirements of your consumers, while also meeting food safety and regulatory norms.
ISO 23293 can also prove to be beneficial for food-related analysis for your product development initiatives.
