What is ISO 23404 about?
ISO 23404 is an international standard on papers and boards used for conservation to measure the impact of volatiles on cellulose in the paper.
ISO 23404 describes a test method for conservation materials that can evaluate their impact on cellulose as the main constituent of paper-based collections caused by the emission of their volatile compounds.
ISO 23404 is applicable to papers and boards used for the conservation and storage of cellulose-based items.
Note1: The test specified by ISO 23404 can be extended to museum artefacts.
Note2: ISO 23404 does not evaluate the effects due to direct contact between the papers and boards used for conservation and the collections.
Who is ISO 23404 for?
ISO 23404 on measurement of the impact of volatiles on cellulose in papers is useful for:
- Paper industries
- Packaging industries
- Testing laboratories/ test providers for paper products
Why should you use ISO 23404?
Studies have shown that neutral or alkaline papers and boards can emit volatiles (such as acids, aldehydes, sulphur-containing compounds, etc., that may depolymerize paper cellulose and therefore weaken it.
ISO 23404 provides you with a test method to measure the impact of volatile compounds emitted by the tested material on a reference paper made of pure cellulose. ISO 23404 can serve as a suitable tool for the completion of ISO 16245 which focuses on the same topic.
ISO 23404 helps you to produce quality paper products by enabling you to measure and regulate the volatiles on cellulose in papers.
