What is ISO 23486 about?
ISO 23486 specifies a method for measuring the in-plane Young’s modulus of thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) formed on substrates, from room temperature up to 1,000 °C.
Thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) are highly advanced material systems, generally applied to surfaces of hot-section components made of nickel or cobalt-based superalloys.
ISO 23486 specifies a method for measuring the Young’s modulus of thermal barrier coatings that consist of multilayers formed on substrate by thermal spraying, from room temperature up to elevated temperature.
Who is ISO 23486 for?
ISO 23486 on thermal barrier coatings is applicable to:
- Power-generation gas turbines thermal power plants
- Aero-engines
- Aerospace
- Automotive manufacturers
Why should you use ISO 23486?
To survive deformation in high-temperature operations, the young's modulus of coatings must be determined. ISO 23486 specifies a method for determining Young's modulus of thermal barrier coatings to access their performance.
Use ISO 23486 to safeguard metallic components for extended periods of time at high elevated temperatures by using thermal barrier coatings that can withstand a significant temperature differential between load-bearing alloys and coating surfaces. ISO 23486 assists the recommendations in testing the performance of thermal barrier coatings that allow high-temperature operation by protecting these components and therefore prolonging their lifespan.
