What is ISO 23673 about?
ISO 23673 specifies a procedure for the determination of an elasticity index based on measurements of the shear storage modulus using oscillatory rheometers, establishes general principles, and gives guidelines for the performance of measurements. The elasticity index is applicable to all thermoplastics and viscoelastic materials for which the elastic behaviour is a crucial application property.
Who is ISO 23673 for?
ISO 23673 on the determination of elastic property of melts is relevant to:
- Plastic and polymer manufacturers
- Polymer scientists
- Plastic/polymer testing laboratories
- Chemical engineers
Why should you use ISO 23673?
Many thermoplastic materials show similar viscosities, but elastic properties can vary significantly, which can lead to inappropriate applications. The definition of an elasticity index describing the elastic properties of resins in a similar way as the viscosity is indicated by the melt flow rate, opens a possibility to designate the elastic properties using a simple characteristic number.
ISO 23673 defines a process for calculating an elasticity index based on shear storage modulus measurements with oscillating rheometers, develops general principles, and provides measurement instructions.
Overall, ISO 23673 can help determine the extent of potential deformation under stress and thus prevent the probability of product failure. Ultimately, selecting materials with the right properties is an essential parameter for the success of the end-use application. If you are a manufacturer, ISO 23673 can also prove beneficial for your product development initiatives.
