What is ISO 23734 about?
ISO 23734 focuses on marine environment impact assessment (MEIA).
ISO 23734 specifies a bioassay for the determination of the presence of unknown toxic contaminants in test seawater. It is based on the inhibition of the photosynthetic activity of the marine cyanobacterium Cyanobium sp. (NIES-981) by such toxic contaminants that are determined based on delayed fluorescence (DF) intensity.
ISO 23734 specifies a method that is rapid and requires less laboratory space than other standard bioassays.
Who is ISO 23734 for?
ISO 23734 on MEIA for marine technology is useful for:
- Marine industry
- Organizations involved in the inspection of the marine environment
- Laboratories engaged in the assessment of seawater quality management
- Sea mining industry
- Marine engineers
Why should you use ISO 23734?
On-board bioassay described in ISO 23734 provides basic data for seawater quality management at deep-sea mining sites where time and space are extremely limited using delayed fluorescence (DF) of the marine cyanobacterium Cyanobium sp.
MEIA under ISO 23734 assists in identifying dominant contributors to unknown toxic contaminants to allocate resources effectively to address significant impacts on the environment and not wasted on items that contribute insignificantly to them.
ISO 23734 provides useful data sets to assess the amount of natural variation in biological systems over a range of different spatial and temporal dimensions.
ISO 23734 has been developed to address the shortcomings of the currently available bioassays for monitoring seawater quality on-board.
