What is ISO 23905 about?
ISO 23905 is a standard that covers the HPLC-FLD method for cigarette mainstream smoke which enables accurate determination of phenolic compounds in cigarettes and regulate their content.
ISO 23905 specifies a method for the quantification of selected phenolic compounds by high-performance liquid chromatography with fluorescence detection (HPLC-FLD) using ISO 3308 smoking parameters. The selected phenolic compounds are hydroquinone, resorcinol, catechol, phenol, p-Cresol, m-Cresol and o-Cresol.
ISO 23905 method is applicable to cigarettes with total particulate matter (TPM) yields between 1 mg/cigarette and 16 mg/cigarette.
Who is ISO 23905 for?
ISO 23905 on phenolic compounds in cigarettes applies to:
- Manufacturers of cigarettes
- Distributors and importers of cigarettes
- Testing houses and labs for cigarettes
- Government regulators
Why should you use ISO 23905?
Often, smoking cigarettes is the main source of exposure to phenolic compounds in humans. Many of these phenolic compounds fall under the category of possible human carcinogens. They are found to promote tumours, damage DNA and cause irritation in the eyes, nose and throat.
ISO 23905 provides you guidance on high-performance liquid chromatography with fluorescence detection (HPLC-FLD) method that uses glass filter pad as trapping mechanism to accurately determine phenolic compounds in cigarettes.
ISO 23905 method is based on results obtained in a collaborative study that involved 18 laboratories using cigarettes manufactured from a range of blend styles that ensures the authenticity and accuracy of the method.
ISO 23905 ensures that you perform the method accurately by providing you with a step-by-step procedure for the method.
The guidance in ISO 23905 enables you to identify phenolic content in cigarettes to regulate its content and limit toxic exposure caused by smoke.
