What is ISO 24047 about?
ISO 24047 specifies a method for the determination of metal content in polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP) by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES).
ISO 24047 is applicable to the determination of the content of magnesium (Mg), aluminum (Al), calcium (Ca), zinc (Zn), chromium (Cr), titanium (Ti), iron (Fe), antimony (Sb), copper (Cu), lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), etc. ISO 24047 is not applicable to the determination of mercury (Hg) due to its volatility.
NOTE 1- ISO 24047 is suitable for base polymers of PE, PP, PE/PP copolymer, and their blends.
NOTE 2- ISO 24047 does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user to establish appropriate safety and health practices.
Who is ISO 24047 for?
ISO 24047 on the determination of metal content in plastic products is useful for:
- Polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP) thermoplastic manufacturing industries
- Polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP) thermoplastic testing institutions
Why should you use ISO 24047?
PE is a lightweight, durable thermoplastic with a variable crystalline structure. PP is an addition polymer made from monomer propylene. It is extremely resistant to many chemical solvents, bases, and acids. Metal elements in PE and PP can lead to increased ash content and can impact overall composition of the product.
ISO 24047 provides a method to determine the metal content in PE and PP and it can serve as a measure for additive monitoring, quality control, and post-reactor studies.
In ISO 24047, inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) is used to determine the concentrations of certain elements in PE and PP.
Metals with higher carbon content are sensitive to hot cracking and hardening, which can result in poor flexibility. Thus, ISO 24047 can help you determine and examine the extent of metal content in material and components as per your specific product and engineering needs, thereby minimising risk of product failure.
