What is ISO 24497-1 about?
ISO 24497-1 is the first part of an international multi-series standard that covers testing methods for metals.
ISO 24497-1 specifies terms and definitions for non-destructive testing (NDT) by the technique of metal magnetic memory (MMM) as well as general requirements for application of this technique of the magnetic testing method. It also specifies requirements for the inspected object, test equipment, preparation for testing, test procedure, test report as well as safety requirements and personnel qualification for non-destructive testing by metal magnetic memory.
Note: The terms specified in ISO 24497-1 are mandatory for application in all types of documentation and literature of non-destructive testing, using the metal magnetic memory technique.
Who is ISO 24497-1 for?
ISO 24497-1 on non-destructive testing by metal magnetic memory is applicable to
- Testing laboratories for metals
- Construction, automotive, mechanical Industries
- Sheet metal manufacturers
- Manufacturers of pressure vessels
- Manufacturers of aircraft & aerospace
Why should you use ISO 24497-1?
The Metal Magnetic Memory method is a testing technique that tests the metals externally without damaging the product. It is mostly used for investigating the defects and regions of high stress, as well as for the assessment of the stress history of an element.
ISO 24497-1 discusses the guidelines for the non-destructive testing (NDT) technique by metal magnetic memory (MMM). It could help you in determining the locations with magnetic stray field aberrations for further microstructural analysis and/or non-destructive testing and evaluation.
Users of ISO 24497-1 can benefit from it, for early diagnostics of fatigue damage of the inspected object and evaluation of its structural lifespan. It helps in the quick sorting of new and used inspection objects by their magnetic heterogeneity for further testing.
ISO 24497-1 helps you in improving the efficiency of non-destructive testing by combining metal magnetic memory testing with other NDT methods or techniques (ultrasonic testing, x-ray, etc.) by fast detection of the most probable defect locations.
What’s changed since the last update?
BS ISO 24497-1:2020 supersedes BS ISO 24497-1:2007 and BS ISO 244972:2007, which are withdrawn. BS ISO 24497-1:2020 includes some technical changes as follows:
- The scope has been revised and extended, and new normative references have been added
- Clause 3 has been revised, and details on the test procedure have been added
- Details of the required test report have been added, and a test example has been added
