What is ISO 24536-Stormwater management about?
ISO 24536 is an International Standard that is applicable to the service activities relating to drinking water supply, wastewater, and stormwater systems. The main objective of ISO 24536 is to establish best practices to minimize and prevent damages from mismanagement of stormwater systems.
ISO 24536 provides guidance to stormwater management authorities and relevant stakeholders on both structural and non-structural stormwater management approaches.
ISO 24536 can be applied to new stormwater systems and to the extension or improvement of existing systems for both fully separated and combined storm and sanitary sewers.
ISO 24536 is applicable to stormwater sewer systems as well as combined sewer systems.
Note: ISO 24536 is not applicable to sanitary sewer systems.
Who is ISO 24536- Stormwater management for?
ISO 24536 on stormwater management is relevant to:
- Municipal water and wastewater service providers
- Local governing authorities
- Forestry commissions
- River authorities or port commissions
- Agricultural commissions
- Environmentalists
Why should you use ISO 24536- Stormwater management?
Stormwater management is critical for preventing agricultural land erosion and flooding in populated urban or rural settings. If sanitation facilities are inundated in any situation, substantial damage and contamination of the environment can occur. The key risks, all of which are identified with high confidence, include those of severe ill-health and disrupted livelihoods for urban populations due to flooding from a range of sources including pluvial, fluvial, storm surges and coastal flooding.
ISO 24536 provides guidelines on stormwater management, including policies, planning, design criteria, and implementation processes, as well as performance evaluation.
ISO 24536 can assist you with:
- Effective flow control and management
- Water quality protection
- Water quantity preservation
- Protection of the built, public, and natural environments
- Water conservation and reuse
- Ecosystem health protection or enhancement
- Public health, safety, and welfare protection or enhancement
- Social values protection or enhancement and facilitation of sustainable development and climate adaptation
As a result, ISO 24536 enables the adoption of best industry practices for stormwater management, avoiding consequences such as loss of life, property damage, transportation, and other service disruptions, and the destruction of scarce freshwater resources, water ecosystems, and sanitary living conditions.
ISO 24536 can be used for the evaluation of design, operation and performance of stormwater systems. When various kinds of measures are proposed, selecting the best option requires evaluation. The comparison between prospective and retrospective evaluations can lead to the continuous improvement of stormwater management. In providing a common process for the evaluation of proposals to plan/design/procure stormwater systems, ISO 24536 facilitates fair trade among suppliers.
