What is ISO 2534 about?
ISO 2534 is an international standard on the engine testing code that provides the best guidance for evaluating the gross power of road vehicles.
ISO 2534 specifies a method for testing internal combustion engines for propulsion of road vehicles as defined in ISO 3833. It applies to the evaluation of their performance with a view, in particular, to presenting curves of power and specific fuel consumption at full load as a function of engine speed.
ISO 2534 concerns internal combustion engines used for propulsion of passenger cars, trucks and other motor vehicles, excluding motorcycles, mopeds and agricultural tractors normally travelling on roads.
Who is ISO 2534 for?
ISO 2534 on engine test code for road vehicles is useful for:
- Road vehicle engine manufacturers
- Vehicle manufacturers
Why should you use ISO 2534?
An internal combustion engine (ICE or IC engine) is a heat engine in which the combustion of a fuel occurs with the help of an oxidizer (usually air) in a combustion chamber that is an important part of the working fluid flow circuit. In an internal combustion engine, the expansion of the high-temperature and high-pressure gases produced by combustion applies direct force to some components of the engine.
Propulsion is a means of creating force leading to movement. Here we are talking about gross power.
ISO 2534 provides the best guidance for conducting a test method to evaluate the gross power of the internal combustion engine, this information is important for the vehicle reseller and the vehicle manufacturer. With the help of this information, you can understand the power of a particular engine and take further business decisions accordingly.
ISO 2534 is primarily intended for the communication between the engine manufacturer and the manufacturer of the vehicle. If used for advertising purposes, the ratings will clearly state that they are gross power
What’s changed since the last update?
BS ISO 2534:2020 supersedes BS ISO 2534:1998, which is withdrawn.
BS ISO 2534:2020 includes some technical changes with respect to BS ISO 2534:1998. These are:
- A requirement for exhaust particulate filter restriction has been added
- A requirement for engine cooling active thermal management system settings has been added
- A power correction factor for turbocharged engines with a system compensating the ambient conditions has been added.
