What is ISO 3046-6 about?
ISO 3046-6 is the sixth part of the multi-series European standard on the combustion engine and specifies general requirements for Overspeed limiting devices used for the protection of reciprocating internal combustion (RIC) engines and their driven machinery to protect them from mechanical breakdown.
ISO 3046-6 applies to reciprocating internal combustion engines for land, rail traction and marine use, excluding engines used in road vehicles and aircraft.
Who is ISO 3046-6 for?
ISO 3046-6 on Overspeed protection in an internal combustion engine is useful to:
- Mechanical Engineers
- Scientists and Researchers
- Designers and Manufacturers of Machines
- Quality and safety department
Why should you use ISO 3046-6?
A reciprocating internal combustion engine is a widely used technology for generating power in several applications such as institutional and industrial power generation and CHP.
ISO 3046-6 provides guidelines and methods to prevent internal combustion engines from overspeeding and causing them to fail and malfunction.
ISO 3046-6 provides features such as the requirement to manually reset the latching mechanism when restarting the engine. However, an automatic reset may be allowed in special applications and electronic control systems.
ISO 3046-6 provides a complete guide and method for preventing machinery from being damaged by excessive speed during combustion in internal combustion engines that can lead to heavy breakdowns and ineffectiveness in the engine.
What’s changed since the last update?
BS ISO 3046-6:2020 supersedes ISO 3046‑6:1990, which are withdrawn. BS ISO 3046-6:2020 includes some technical changes:
- The scope has been changed;
- New terms have been added;
- Overspeed limiting mechanical security requirements have been added;
- Overspeed limiting electronic control system security requirements have been added.
