What is ISO 3584 about?
ISO 3584 is an international standard on clevis couplings for road vehicles which discusses its interchangeability.
ISO 3584 specifies the characteristics necessary for the mounting and interchangeability of clevis couplings on the frame (cross member, drawbeam or mounting bracket) of towing vehicles for trailers.
ISO 3584 is applicable to clevis couplings intended for connection to trailers equipped with a drawbar eye on the drawbar of the trailer.
Note: Characteristics not specified are left to the discretion of the component manufacturer.
Who is ISO 3584 for?
ISO 3584 on Clevis couplings - Interchangeability is useful for:
- Clevis couplings manufacturers
- Towing vehicle manufacturers
Why should you use ISO 3584?
A clevis fastener is a two-piece fastener system consisting of a clevis and a clevis pinhead. The clevis is a U-shaped piece that has holes at the end of the prongs to accept the clevis pin. The clevis pin is quite similar to a bolt but is either partially threaded or unthreaded with a cross-hole for a split pin.
Clevises are used in a wide variety of fasteners used in farming equipment and sailboat rigging, as well as the automotive, aircraft and construction industries
With the use of ISO 3584, we can understand the characteristics that are important for the mounting and interchangeability of clevis couplings. This can be used to facilitate attaching a chain, wire rope or synthetic sling for rigging, towing and lifting, which will make the towing process easier
