What is ISO 4384‑1 - Hardness testing of bearing metals about?
ISO 4384‑1 is an international standard that discusses plain bearings.
ISO 4384‑1 is the first part of the series that specifies parameters for the hardness testing of compound materials for plain bearings made from steel and bearing metal with bearing metals based on copper and aluminium, manufactured by casting, sintering or bonding. It represents a supplement to the existing ISO publications on hardness testing and, therefore, includes only the extensions and restrictions to be observed compared to those publications.
The measuring method applied depends on the bearing metal layer thickness, its hardness and its structure.
Who is for ISO 4384‑1 - Hardness testing of bearing metals for?
ISO 4384‑1 on plain bearings is applicable to:
- Manufactures of plain bearings
- Manufacturers of bearing metals
- Mechanical engineers
- Manufacturers of machinery and equipment
Why should you use ISO 4384‑1 - Hardness testing of bearing metals?
Plain bearings are used for sliding, rotating, oscillating, or reciprocating motion. Plain bearings support and guide moving components inside the engine. The objective of plain bearings is to prevent wear of the machine's support points, which would occur if the shafts were to roll directly on the structure.
ISO 4384‑1 provides the conditions for hardness testing of compound materials for plain bearings made of steel and bearing metals made of copper and aluminium, which are formed by casting, sintering, or bonding. The testing provides indications on the quality and durability of materials, which can be helpful to assess the performance and service-life of the plain bearing metals for your specific end-application.
If you are a manufacturer, you can demonstrate the reliability and quality of your products by meeting the requirements in accordance with ISO 4384‑1.
What’s changed since the last update?
BS ISO 4384‑1:2019 supersedes BS ISO 4384‑1:2012, which has been withdrawn. BS ISO 4384‑1:2019 has been editorially revised. The changes compared to the previous edition are as follows:
- “This part of ISO 4384” has been replaced with “this document”
- A new clause 3 has been included for terms and definitions
