What is ISO 4386-1- Pulse-echo test for metallic multilayer plain bearings about?
ISO 4386 is an International Standard that discusses plain bearings.
ISO 4386-1 is the first part of a multi-series that is applicable to metallic multilayer plain bearings and that specifies an ultrasonic testing method for determining bond defects between the bearing metal and the backing.
The test can be performed on metallic multilayer plain bearings consisting of steel- or copper-based material backings lined with bearing metal based on lead and tin, with layer thicknesses greater than or equal to 0,5 mm.
For cast iron backings, ISO 4386-1 is applicable with restrictions.
Who is ISO 4386-1- Pulse-echo test for metallic multilayer plain bearings for?
ISO 4386-1 on plain bearings is applicable to:
- Manufacturers of metallic multilayer plain bearings
- Mechanical engineers
- Product design engineers
- Personnel involved in non-destructive ultrasonic testing
Why should you use ISO 4386-1- Pulse-echo test for metallic multilayer plain bearings?
The ultrasonic signal reflected by the bond interface between the bearing metal and the backing is used to determine bonding defects.
ISO 4386-1 describes in detail the pulse-echo method. Within the meaning of ISO 4386-1, the ultrasonic method permits a qualitative evaluation of the bonding and not a quantitative determination of the bond strength.
If you are a manufacturer, identifying the bonding defects can minimize the risk of bearing failure enhance its service-life.
What’s changed since the last update?
ISO 4386-1:2019 supersedes BS ISO 4386-1: 2012, which is withdrawn. BS ISO 4386-1:2019 has been editorial revised with the following change:
- Adjustment to the ISO Directives, including the implementation of Clause 3 Terms and definitions
