What is ISO 4986 about?
ISO 4986 is an international standard on steel and iron castings that discusses various tests and examinations to ensure the quality of castings. ISO 4986 specifies a method for the magnetic particle testing of ferromagnetic steel and iron castings. It also gives acceptance criteria through severity levels defined by the nature, the area and the dimensions of the discontinuities present.
ISO 4986 applies to all ferromagnetic castings, independent of the moulding method. A steel and iron casting is considered to be ferromagnetic if the magnetic induction is greater than 1 T (Tesla) for a magnetic field strength of 2,4 kA/m.
ISO 4986 only applies to those areas of the castings specified for testing, as well as the percentage of castings to be tested.
Who is ISO 4986 for?
ISO 4986 on magnetic particle testing is relevant to:
- Ferromagnetic Steel and iron casting manufacturer
- Quality control officer
Why should you use ISO 4986?
Magnetic particle examination (MT) is a very popular, low-cost method to perform nondestructive examination (NDE) of ferromagnetic material. Magnetic particle examination (MT) is used for detecting surface and shallow subsurface discontinuities in ferromagnetic materials
ISO 4986 provides the best guidance on testing, operating mode, surface preparation, magnetic particle testing indications, non-linear indications (SM), linear indications (LM) and aligned indications (AM), magnetic particle test report which guides the user in performing Magnetic particle examination on ferromagnetic material.
As a user of ISO 4986, you can ensure the quality of ferromagnetic steel and iron castings and can detect surface and shallow subsurface discontinuities by using magnetic particle examination. ISO 4986 assist the user in performing magnetic particle examination without any difficulties this helps you to improve the quality of products which in turn helps in establishing reputation in customer markets.
What’s changed since the last update?
BS ISO 4986:2020 supersedes BS ISO 4986:2010, which is withdrawn
The main changes compared to the previous edition are as follows:
- Addition of a definition of a cluster of non-linear (SM) in Non-linear indications (SM)
- Addition of “aligned (AM) indications” in Linear indications (LM) and aligned indications (AM), Linear and aligned indications Selection of the severity level and Annex C
