BS ISO 5725-3 has also been updated. Check it here.
What is BS ISO 5725-1 - General principles and definitions of measurement methods about?
The BS ISO 5725 series of international standards provides a toolbox for studying the performance of standard methods of measurement and testing. BS ISO 5725-1:2023 gives general concepts and definitions.
Who is BS ISO 5725-1 - General principles and definitions of measurement methods for?
The BS ISO 5725 series is primarily intended for use by organizations in a wide range of industrial sectors who are developing standard measurement methods for testing for compliance with specifications or regulations.
What does BS ISO 5725-1 - General principles and definitions of measurement methods cover?
The purpose of BS ISO 5725-1:2023 is to outline the general principles to be understood when assessing accuracy (trueness and precision) of measurement methods and results and in applications to establish practical estimations of the various measures by experiment.
It defines values which describe, in quantitative terms, the ability of a measurement method to give a true result (trueness) or to replicate a given result (precision).
BS ISO 5725-1 can be applied to a very wide range of items, including gas, liquids, powders and solid objects, manufactured or naturally occurring, provided that due consideration is given to any heterogeneity of the item.
Why should you use BS ISO 5725-1 - General principles and definitions of measurement methods?
-
It’s useful. BS ISO 5725-1 supplies the conditions, constraints and resources needed to evaluate a measurement method or result. It also defines an organizational scheme for acquisition of trueness and precision data by study and provides the necessary definitions, statistical model and principles for the whole BS ISO 5725 series.
-
It’s standardized. The BS ISO 5725 series provides a standardized framework for assessing the precision and trueness of measurement methods. By following these guidelines, users can ensure consistency and comparability of results across different laboratories or measurement systems.
-
It’s current. BS ISO 5725-1:2023 has been updated to match current international terminology and define additional terms now used in other parts of the series.
-
It helps with compliance. BS ISO 5725-1 can help demonstrate that compliance is being achieved. This in turn can help with market access.
-
It helps businesses. It also accelerates the adoption of innovation and strengthens risk management.
-
It helps individuals. BS ISO 5725-1 can help you develop your measurement expertise and improve efficiency.
What’s new about BS ISO 5725-1:2023?
BS ISO 5725-1:2023 is the second edition of ISO 5725-1 cancels and replaces the first edition (BS ISO 5725-1:1994) which has been updated and technically revised to match current international terminology and define additional terms now used in other parts of the ISO 5725 series. The main changes compared with the previous edition are:
- normative references have been revisited
- some definitions have been deleted (observed value, cell in a precision experiment, collaborative assessment experiment) and others one have been added (repeatability critical difference, reproducibility critical difference, intermediate precision conditions, intermediate precision standard deviation, intermediate precision critical difference, intermediate precision limit)
- the number of laboratories required for a precision study and Annex B presenting charts of uncertainties for precision measures have been moved into BS ISO 5725-2
- guidance on the practical use of trueness and precision to evaluate uncertainty and the use of BS ISO 21748 is added.
