What is ISO 5834-4 - Oxidation index measurement method about?
ISO 5834 is an international standard that discusses ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene for surgical implants. ISO 5834-4 provides the best industry guidance on oxidation index measurement methods to enhance surgical implants.
ISO 5834-4 is the fourth part of a multi-part series that specifies a method for the measurement of the relative extent of oxidation present in ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE). The material is analysed by infrared spectroscopy.
ISO 5834-4 applies to ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) intended for use in surgical implants.
Note 1: Although the method under ISO 5834-4 might give the investigator a means to compare the relative extent of carbonyl oxidation present in various UHMWPE samples, it is recognized that other forms of chemically bound can be important contributors to the characteristics of these materials.
Note 2: Other forms of chemically bound oxygen (R1OR2, R1OOR2, ROH, etc.) are not detected by the method under ISO 5834-4.
Who is ISO 5834-4 - Oxidation index measurement method for?
ISO 5834-4 on the oxidation index measurement method is relevant to:
- Ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene manufacturers
- Test centres
Why should you use ISO 5834-4 - Oxidation index measurement method?
Ultra-High molecular weight polyethylene is a very high viscosity polymer that is produced in powdered form. It has outstanding abrasion resistance, chemical resistance and is good in frictional properties, due to these outstanding factors Ultra-High molecular weight polyethylene includes bulk material handling.
The method under ISO 5834-4, using the intensity (area) of the C-H absorption centred near 1 370 cm−1 to normalize for the sample’s thickness and has been validated by an interlaboratory study (ILS).
ISO 5834-4 guideline assists you with Preparation of test specimens, Configuration of test specimen in the spectrometer, Preparation of the infrared spectrometer, Oxidation peak area, Normalization peak area, Oxidation index, Depth locator and reports for Oxidation index measurement method for ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene surgical implants.
With compliance and obedience to ISO 5834-4, you can efficiently assess carbonyl oxidation present in ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene and produce results that are reliable and can be reproduced in any laboratory.
What’s changed since the last update?
BS ISO 5834-4:2019 supersedes ISO 5834-4:2005, which is withdrawn. BS ISO 5834-4:2019 has made some technical changes compared to ISO 5834-4:2005. These include:
- The test methods are harmonized with respective ASTM standards
- The editorial updates are in line with all other parts of the ISO 5834 series
