What is ISO 6281 about?
ISO 6281 defines requirements for the testing of lubricated plain journal bearings in test rigs, running under conditions of hydrodynamic or mixed lubrication, during bearing and/or material development.
Note: ISO 6281 is not applicable to the testing of dynamic characteristics of lubricant film in journal bearings applied in the calculation of vibration and stability of turbo-rotors.
Note: It is intended that further details of test procedures be established when carrying out testing based on ISO 6281.
Who is ISO 6281 for?
ISO 6281 on testing under conditions of hydrodynamic and mixed lubrication is relevant to:
- Plain bearings manufacturers
- Construction industry
- Automotive industry
Why should you use ISO 6281?
Journal or plain bearings consist of a shaft or journal which rotates freely in a supporting metal sleeve or shell. There are no rolling elements in these bearings.
ISO 6281 deals with both static and dynamic loading in solid and multi-layer journal bearings.
Under ISO 6281, the test goals for plain journal bearing test rigs running under hydrodynamic or mixed lubrication are to collect information on, among other things, the bearing attributes, which might serve as essential variables when designing and implementing the bearing.
ISO 6281 specifies the operation principle, specification, range, accuracy and uncertainty, linearity and hysteresis, resolution, response frequency, and so on as well as any other pertinent equipment performance.
ISO 6281 establishes test requirements to ensure that test results produced on test rigs are applicable in practice and that results acquired on different test rigs are mutually compatible.
Thus, testing conducted in compliance with ISO 6281, can help you manufacture plain bearings with standardised process that ensure optimal efficiency of end-applications, with the right selection of lubricated plain journal bearings.
What’s changed since the last update?
BS ISO 6281:2020 supersedes BS ISO 6281:2007, which is withdrawn BS ISO 6281:2020 includes some technical changes with respect to BS ISO 6281:2007. These include:
- Editorial changes
- Reference to ISO 9045 has been replaced by ISO 4378 (all parts)
- Clause 1 has been edited to be in line with ISO drafting rules
- The unit of the dynamic viscosity in Clause 4 has been modified.
