What is ISO 7524 about?
ISO 7524 is a standard that serves the technical specifications for the determination of carbon content in ferronickels using the infrared absorption method after induction furnace combustion.
ISO 7524 specifies an infrared absorption method after combustion in an induction furnace for the determination of the carbon content in ferronickels in the range of 0.004 % to 2.5 %.
ISO 7524 method is applicable to normal production operations. It uses commercially available equipment, which is calibrated using steel and/or ferronickel certified reference materials (CRMs).
Who is ISO 7524 for?
ISO 7524 on the determination of carbon content in ferronickels is applicable to:
- Steel manufacturers
- Metallurgists
- Quality control personnel
- Metallurgy laboratories
Why should you use ISO 7524?
Ferronickel composition varies from 80% iron and 20% nickel to 40% nickel and 60% iron which is dependent on the amount of carbon in the calcine feed. Ferronickels are used for producing stainless steel which requires a specified amount of carbon content or else they might become excessively hard or brittle to work with.
ISO 7524 helps you perform the infrared adsorption method by providing you with a detailed account of the requirements of the method. ISO 7524 ensures that you perform the test accurately by providing you with the step-by-step procedure for infrared adsorption. ISO 7524 also assists you in calculating the outcome of the test method and expressing them in quantitative terms.
The infrared adsorption method given in ISO 7524 helps you to identify and in turn regulate the carbon content in ferronickels.
What’s changed since the last update?
BS ISO 7524:2020 supersedes BS 6783‑5:1986, which is now withdrawn.
Changes in BS ISO 7524:2020 include –
- The scope has been limited to ferronickel only
- The former Clauses 5 and 7 have been technically revised
- The former Annexes A and C have been deleted
- The precision data have been updated
