What is ISO 799-1 - Pilot ladders about ?
ISO 799-1 specifies requirements for pilot ladders of a ship, which are provided to enable a maritime pilot to embark and disembark from a ship safely against a vertical portion of the ship’s hull. It is applicable to merchant ships that embark and disembark maritime pilots with the ship underway.
ISO 799-1 is intended to supplement existing IMO requirements for pilot ladders. Since IMO instruments do not include specific requirements for prototype testing of pilot ladders for approval, the tests included in this document are in excess of the existing IMO requirements.
ISO 799-1 can be used for independent acceptance of a pilot ladder complying with SOLAS, in which case certification must be issued from a signatory state of SOLAS.
Note: ISO 799 is incorporated by reference and footnoted in the International Convention on Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) Chapter V Regulation 23.2.3.
Who is ISO 799-1:2019 - Pilot ladders for ?
ISO 799‑1 on pilot ladders of the ship is applicable to:
- Ship and marine technology
- Marine industries
- Maritime pilots
- Ladder manufacturers
- Deck equipment and installations systems
Why should you use ISO 799-1 - Pilot ladders ?
Pilot ladders are used onboard ships for embarkation and disembarkation of maritime pilots. The pilot ladders are inspected before use for safe transfer of personnel as the failure of the pilot ladder due to inadequate maintenance and inspection can cause severe accidents.
By adopting ISO 799-1, manufacturers can build efficient pilot ladders for ships and can have quality assurance to ensure that production ladders are produced according to the requirements.
ISO 799-1 guides in proper evaluation and maintenance of pilot ladders to improve the efficiency and safety of pilot ladders. ISO 799-1 assists in building trust in the use of pilot ladders throughout the ship and marine supply chain by providing safety and reliability of pilot ladders.
