What is ISO 8081 - Chemical conversion coating for aluminium alloys about?
ISO 8081 is part of the aerospace series. ISO 8081 discusses coatings on aluminium alloys. ISO 8081 specifies requirements for producing and testing a general-purpose chemical conversion coating on aluminium alloys.
The chemical conversion coating is used in the manufacturing of aerospace products to improve paint adhesion and resistance to corrosion. This process can be used for the touch-up of anodic coatings.
Who is ISO 8081 - Chemical conversion coating for aluminium alloys for?
ISO 8081 on chemical conversion coating for aluminium alloys is applicable to:
- Aerospace and defence industries
- Aluminium alloys manufacturing industries
- Manufacturers of aerospace products
- Quality control / testing / compliance professionals
Why should you use ISO 8081 - Chemical conversion coating for aluminium alloys?
ISO 8081 gives you guidelines for chemical conversion coating for aluminium alloys in the aerospace field. Chemical conversion coating provides anti-corrosive properties, and also improves paint adhesion on aircraft and military land vehicles.
ISO 8081 meets the current manufacturing requirements to introduce hexavalent chromium-free conversion coating. ISO 8081 guides the surface treatment process of aerospace products to control product quality, and reduce costs. By adopting ISO 8081, you can demonstrate the reliability of your aerospace products, and build trust in its use throughout the aerospace supply chain.
What’s changed since the last update?
BS ISO 8081:2021 supersedes BS ISO 8081:1985. BS ISO 8081:2021 includes some technical changes with respect to BS ISO 8081:1985. These include:
- The normative references updated
- Added different types of chemical conversion coatings classification, including hexavalent chromium-free chemical conversion coating (see 4.1)
- Deleted chemical conversion solution requirements
- Changed air temperature of drying parts from (60 °c to 65 °c) to not more than 60 °c for type i, not more than 65 °c for type ii (see 4.6.6.2)
- Made the requirements of process control tests and process qualification tests clearer (see 5.3 and 5.4)
- Changed the previous paint adhesion test method (see 5.6.4)
- Deleted coating adhesion tests
