What is ISO 8528‑3 about?
ISO 8528‑3 is the third part of the multi-series standard that specifies the principal characteristics of alternating current (a.c.) generators under the control of their excitation control system when used for reciprocating internal combustion (RIC) engine driven generating set applications and supplements the requirements given in IEC 60034‑1. It covers the use of such a.c. generators for land and marine applications, excluding generating sets used on aircraft or to propel land vehicles and locomotives.
For a.c. generating sets driven by other reciprocating-type prime movers the provisions of ISO 8528-3 can be used as basis for establishing these requirements.
Note: For some specific applications (e.g., essential hospital supplies, high-rise buildings, operation parallel with the grid), supplementary requirements can be necessary. The provisions of this document can be regarded as the basis for establishing any supplementary requirements.
Who is ISO 8528‑3 for?
ISO 8528‑3 on reciprocating internal combustion engines is relevant to:
- Companies dealing with exhaust and internal combustion engines
- Manufacturing for internal engines
- Electrical engineers
- Automobile industry
- Aircraft and marine industries
Why should you use ISO 8528‑3?
Reciprocating internal combustion engines is a device that converts chemical energy which is contained in a hydrocarbon into mechanical energy and converts into the thermal energy of the waste gases that escape into the atmosphere.
ISO 8528-3 provides methods and principles for generating AC current using generating sets inside reciprocating internal combustion engines.
ISO 8528-3 provides guidelines for an AC power generation set and specifies all the parameters to consider when selecting components, as well as special guides vehicles with special load conditions.
Overall, ISO 8528-3 provides complete information about converting reciprocating combustion engines' energy into electrical energy, resulting in increased efficiency and cost savings.
What’s changed since the last update?
BS EN ISO 8528‑3:2020 supersedes BS EN ISO 8528‑3:2005. BS EN ISO 8528‑3:2020 includes some technical changes concerning BS EN ISO 8528‑3:2005. These include:
- Clause 7 (ISO 8528‑3:2005, Clause 9) has been updated with requirements for isochronous operation and grid parallel operation
- Requirements for asynchronous generators have been integrated in Clause 8 (ISO 8528‑3:2005, Clause 10)
- New power rating “GPO” has been introduced for grid parallel operation
- Operating limits have been revised
- New clauses have been added for specifying “bearings” and “maintenance”
- Identification markings BR and PR have been eliminated
