What is ISO 8820-3 – Road vehicle fuse-links Types C, E, and F about?
ISO 8820 is a series of the international standard on road vehicles fuse-links that is used for circuit protection in the wiring of a vehicle.
ISO 8820-3 is the third part of the ISO 8820 series of documents that specifies fuse-links with tabs (blade-type) Type C (medium), Type E (high current), and Type F (miniature) for use in road vehicles.
ISO 8820-3 establishes, for these fuse-link types, the rated current, test procedures, performance requirements, and dimensions.
Who is ISO 8820-3 - Road vehicle fuse-links Types C, E, and F for?
ISO 8820-3 on road vehicle fuse-links is useful for:
- Road vehicle engineers
- Mechanical and electrical engineers
- Designers of road vehicle fuse-links
- Manufacturers of electrical and electronic equipment
Why should you use ISO 8820-3 - Road vehicle fuse-links Types C, E, and F?
A fusible link is a short piece of insulated low-voltage cable within an automotive wiring harness that is designed to protect the harness in applications where a fuse is unsuitable. Marking, labelling, and colour coding of fuse-link are mentioned in ISO 8820-3.
ISO 8820-3 navigates you through the general requirements, test procedure and test sequence for fuse-links.
Voltage drop test, transient current cycling, operating time-rating test, breaking capacity and strength of terminals of fuse-links are provided in ISO 8820-3.
Test cable sizes are outlined in ISO 8820-3 to allow comparative fuse-link tests to be carried out. Dimensions and designations of fuse-links Types C, E, and F are specified in ISO 8820-3.
Overall, ISO 8820-3 leads you through the designing of fuse-links for road vehicles to provide circuit protection in the wiring of a vehicle in the case of a short circuit or voltage spike. In this way, fuses are the most common and numerous methods of circuit protection in an automobile and a fusible link is a special type of wire that protects a circuit that has constant high current requirements and must resist high surges in the circuit.
