What is ISO/IEC 11179‑7 – Metadata registries about?
ISO/IEC 11179‑7 is the seventh part of the ISO/IEC 11179 multi-series that discusses metadata registries of information technology.
ISO/IEC 11179‑7 provides a specification for an extension to a Metadata Registry (MDR), as specified in ISO/IEC 11179-3, Clauses 5 to 11 in which metadata that describes data sets, collections of data available for access or download in one or more formats, can be registered. Since a set can contain a single element, ISO/IEC 11179‑7 enables the recording of metadata about a single data value.
The registered metadata provides information about the data set that includes the provenance and the quality of the dataset.
Who is ISO/IEC 11179‑7 – Metadata registries for?
ISO/IEC 11179‑7 on metamodel for data set registration is useful for:
- IT experts
- Any organization that wants to make its data simple and shareable
Why should you use ISO/IEC 11179‑7 – Metadata registries?
Many data sets are now generally available. These may be part of a government-led open data initiative or might be data sets that are used within and across organizations for commercial, scientific or academic purposes. There is a requirement for metadata about these data sets to be readily available to enable the consistent and appropriate use of data and information and to prevent duplication of work. Having an enhanced Metadata Registry where metadata that describes data sets is registered will facilitate the discovery of appropriate data sets.
ISO/IEC 11179‑7 provides you with a specification of the extensions to the registry metamodel described in ISO/IEC 11179-3, Clauses 5 to 11 to enable the registration of metadata about datasets. ISO/IEC 11179‑7 helps you to assess the quality of data and facilitates its improvement so it can be implemented more effectively by the organization.
ISO/IEC 11179-3 guidelines help you to make your organization’s data more accessible and facilitate the decision-making process.
