What is ISO/IEC 21836 about?
ISO/IEC 21836 is an international standard on information technology that discusses the energy effectiveness of a computer servers.
ISO/IEC 21836 provides a server energy effectiveness metric (SEEM) for efficient use of data centre energy for managing environmental, cost, electrical grid capacity, and other impacts.
ISO/IEC 21836 specifies a measurement method to assess and report the energy effectiveness of a computer server.
Note: ISO/IEC 21836 does not set any pass/fail criteria for servers.
Who is ISO/IEC 21836 for?
ISO/IEC 21836 on SEEM is relevant to:
- Government
- Vendors
- Stakeholders
- Entities involved in conformance verification, procurement and operation
Why should you use ISO/IEC 21836?
The global economy is now completely reliant on information and communication technologies (ICT) and the associated generation, transmission, dissemination, computation, and storage of digital data.
As the internet backbone carries a lot of traffic, it is the data centres that find themselves at the nodes and hubs of a wide variety of both private enterprise and shared/collocation facilities.
Due to large and continually increasing data capacity demands placed on data centres, efficient use of data centre energy is an extremely important strategy for managing environmental, cost, electrical grid capacity, and other impacts.
Organizations that wish to establish conformance or reporting programmes can find that the test methods and scoring specified in ISO/IEC 21836 saves them significant time and effort in implementing such programmes.
Standardization across such programmes can allow vendors to comply to stakeholder requirements more quickly and efficiently.
The method mentioned under ISO/IEC 21836 helps to report programs and establish conformance which thus saves time and effort while implementing such programs ISO/IEC 21836 can help reduce and manage environmental, cost, and other impacts which occur due to energy from data centres.
Proper assessment and reporting of the energy effectiveness of a computer server can help to reduce traffic and prevent other impacts like environmental, cost, etc.
