What is ISO/IEC 22237-1 about?
ISO/IEC 22237-1 is the first part of our information technology series. This series focuses on data centre facilities and infrastructure. ISO/IEC 22237-1 describes the general concepts of data centre facilities and infrastucture.
ISO/IEC 22237-1 specifies the general principles and common aspects of data centres. This includes terminology, parameters, and reference models (functional elements and their accommodation). ISO/IEC 22237-1 addresses both the size and complexity of their intended purpose for data centres, since each data centre addresses different needs of clients.
ISO/IEC 22237-1 specifies the facilities and infrastructure which are required to support data centers. ISO/IEC 22237-1 also describes the classification system which is based on availability, security and energy-efficiency of the data centre.
ISO/IEC 22237-1 details the issues to be addressed in a business risk, and operating cost analysis; which enables the classification of the data centre.
Note 1: Under ISO/IEC 22237-1 safety and electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) requirements regulations are not covered.
Note 2: Under ISO/IEC 22237-1 quantitative analysis of overall service availability is not covered.
Note 3: Selection of information technology and network telecommunications equipment, software and associated configuration issues are not covered here.
Note 4: ISO/IEC 22237-1 does not address the selection of information technology and network telecommunications equipment, software, and associated configuration issues.
Who is ISO/IEC 22237-1 for?

Why should you use ISO/IEC 22237-1 ?
ISO/IEC 22237-1 serves as a guiding document to be used in collaboration among architects, building designers, builders, and system and installation designers.
Today, every kind of firm stores and transmits large volumes of data on a daily basis. Data centres need to provide modular, scalable and flexible facilities and infrastructure to fulfill this need. The needs of data centres vary in terms of purpose, security level, size, accomodation, and objectives for energy efficiency. The guidelines given in ISO/IEC 22237-1 help you to understand general concepts for setting up and running different types of data centres.
The ISO/IEC 22237 series specifies requirements and recommendations to support those who are working together to design, plan, procure, integrate, instal, operate and maintain facilities and infrastructure within data centres.
ISO/IEC 22237-1 helps you with guidelines for operating and managing data centres and making them more flexible, modular and scalable so that they can easily accommodate the rapidly changing requirements of the market.
ISO/IEC 22237-1 helps you in becoming more environmentally sustainable, as energy consumption of data centres has become critical, both from an environmental point of view and with respect to economic considerations (cost of energy). ISO/IEC 22237-1 accomplishes this by having a more efficient design.
ISO/IEC 22237-1 functions as the base reference document for the other documents in the series.
What’s changed since the last update?
ISO/IEC 22237-1:2021 supersedes PD ISO/IEC TS 222371:2018 which is withdrawn due to changes, and as it technically revised.
The main changes are:
- Reference to Key Performance Indicators of ISO/IEC 30134 series has been included
- Clause 7 (Availability) has been revised
- The design processes (Clause 8) and design principles (Clause 9) have been moved from an annex to the main body of the document
- The existing Annex A has been removed
- New Annexes A and B have been added
